What Building Looks Like in 2026
My co-founder Louie vibe-coded a working prototype of our SaaS with zero coding background. Claude Code, natural language, a few days. Buggy and local-only, but there were enough features to see his vision. I'd heard his pain points before — the tool fragmentation, the cost, nothing built for design agencies — but when he built it, the value became clear. I took the same tools and shipped a production system — multi-tenant, role-based access, deployed and handling users. Then I started thinking about how to build it for agents, not just humans.
The difference between Louie's prototype and what shipped wasn't code quality. Claude wrote decent code for both of us. The difference was knowing what production requires — and knowing how to get the most out of the model.
The ChatGPT Moment for Building
This feels like 2022-23 again. Back then, people who couldn't write articles or poems suddenly could. People who had real use cases — content at scale, research synthesis, customer communication — got massive value. Everyone tinkered.
The same thing is happening with building software. The models are good enough now that the barrier to creating something functional has dropped to nearly zero. Louie proved that. But the gap between functional and production is where the practitioner lives — and that gap is about understanding the system, not writing the code.
What the Work Actually Looks Like
The daily reality is operating AI systems.
Debugging is still the job
Reading Vercel deployment logs to understand why a webhook handler silently fails. Tracing real-time message state through browser DevTools and Firestore to figure out ordering bugs. Staring at Stripe's dashboard to understand why event types don't match the subscription model. Today you can give agents MCP tools and CLI access to check these things directly — and increasingly they do. But someone still needs to know what to check, what the output means, and whether the agent is looking in the right place.
System design is still human
The model can implement a database schema. It can't decide what the schema should be. It doesn't know that your messaging system needs threading AND channels AND cross-organization DMs with different permission rules for each. Those are product decisions that require understanding how the system will be used. The schema is where the human thinking lives.
The toolkit moves fast
The space is moving faster than ever. At the start of 2025, agents couldn't use a computer well — both because of model limitations and because the ecosystem tooling didn't exist. Today, computer use and browser control are table stakes. Models like Opus can advise on ad copy and directly manage Meta campaigns. They can script and generate video content and UGC.
What was a limitation yesterday is a capability today. The practitioner's job is knowing where the boundary is right now and building accordingly. Prompt engineering, MCP integrations, skill composition, context management — these are the levers. They change with every model update.
Watching the frontier
OpenClaw drops and suddenly the entire community is doubling down on the file system for memory and context management. A new MCP server appears and your agent can interact with a platform it couldn't touch before. A model update makes a workaround you spent a week building unnecessary. The landscape shifts weekly.
There's a tension here that everyone building with AI feels. The compulsion to keep up is exhausting. Every week there's a new tool, a new capability, a new thing your agent could be doing. Watching closely but building deliberately — absorbing what matters for your specific problems and letting the rest go — is the only approach I've found that doesn't burn you out.
The Line Is Moving
Gergely Orosz at The Pragmatic Engineer recently wrote about the grief developers feel as AI writes more of their code. The satisfaction of solving hard problems is shifting toward higher-level thinking — instructing complex systems rather than writing them line by line.
Where the line sits between "understand every character" and "understand the problem" is not fixed. It moves with the models. The gap between a vibe-coded prototype and production is shrinking every month — not because non-developers are learning to code, but because the models are getting better at asking themselves the questions a senior developer would ask.
But someone still needs to understand the problem.
What stays human
What the product needs to do. What the platform constraints are. What breaks at scale. Where the model's capability boundary is today. How to compose skills and tools to get the most out of it.
The path I've been on — from using AI as a tool, to operating AI systems, to orchestrating agents that execute across projects over a long horizon — each step required the same core skills. Understanding systems. Knowing where to look. Recognizing what the model can and can't see. Just applied at a different scale each time.
Vision over syntax
Louie built a working prototype because he'd spent six years running a design agency. He knew he was overpaying across too many platforms. He knew what his team actually needed. He understood the problem deeply enough that when AI gave him the ability to build, he could. No CS degree. No coding background. Just a clear vision from lived experience.
"Can you code?" and "can you build?" are becoming very different questions.
